Why was I so freaked out about gestational diabetes? The eating plan the nutritionist gave me is like dieting at the kindergarten level. She was awesome, supportive, understanding, and best of all, she didn't treat me like I had diabetes just because I'm overweight. THANK HEAVENS.
She reassured me that I have multiple risk factors, Hashimotos being the biggest. Thanks a lot Hashimotos, genetics, age, and weight :(
I eat 30 carbs in the morning, 15 for a snack, 30-60 at lunch, 15 for a snack, 30-60 for dinner, and 15 for a snack.
That's it. Aside from testing my blood sugar 4 times a day and peeing on a ketone test strip in the morning, that's all I have to do.
So far I'm actually starting to question the diabetes diagnoses because my fasting blood sugar has consistently been in the low 80's and the only time my blood sugar went above 120 was when I had white bread- my blood sugar has spiked to 150 both times I had white bread. Other than that, it hits maybe 120, but usually 110-117 is it. I have another appointment on Wednesday but so far I'm not worried at all about eating this way.
I am shocked at how expensive diabetes is though- with insurance, my 25 day supply of test strips is $35... extra ketone test strips and needles...add to that the rest of a month's supply of strips, extra doctor appointment co-pays, and that's about an extra $100 a month. Sheesh! I've never been so grateful for insurance in all of my life. The strips alone without insurance are $130.
I'm confident they will be happy that my blood sugar has been in range and maybe trust me enough to not make me test 4 times a day for the rest of this pregnancy....I've got a LONG way to go still and right now all I see are dollar signs when I think about how much that will cost in supplies!
So happy for you and your pregnancy!
